Plastic Free July 2024
July is celebrated every year as a plastic free month to create awareness on the threat plastic waste is creating to the environment. It is also an opportunity to take steps at an individual and community level to eliminate the use of single-use plastic. Casagrand Luxus, a residential community based in KR Puram, Bengaluru has been taking up several initiatives to reduce non-biodegradable waste coming from homes and the community in general.

Reuse Cutlery Bank
​Seeing the amount of plastic packaged water bottles, paper cups, non-biodegradable single-use cutlery being used, few residents got together to start a reusable cutlery bank. The inspiration for this idea came after seeing the KR Puram Reuse Cutlery Bank from where we used to borrow reuse cutlery for our community events. The residents pooled in money to buy stainless steel cutlery consisting of glasses, plates, spoons and bowls. We currently have 100 numbers of each of these items.

Residents are encouraged to borrow the cutlery from this bank free of charge. After use, they are expected to wash it well and return it to the bank. All the residents have adopted this change in lifestyle enthusiastically and it is now two years in the running. ​​

Say No to Balloons
We do not use balloons in our community for any community and private functions. Awareness is generated on the harm balloons pose to the environment. Residents use bio-degradable alternatives to balloons for decorations like paper and cloth buntings, flags and other festoons. The pictures given are from the birthday functions and national festivals conducted within our community

Eco-Friendly Gift Wraps
The shiny foils, so widely used for gift wrapping, are non-biodegradable. Hence, some of the residents decided to use newspaper to wrap Secret Santa gifts during Christmas in 2023. This practice is now followed in other private and community level functions as well.
